At Restore and More, we’re often asked what makes certain pianos so special compared to others. One name that always sparks admiration among musicians and restorers alike is Bechstein. Known for their unmistakable craftsmanship and rich tonal qualities, Bechstein instruments from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are often described as belonging to the Golden Age of Bechstein Pianos.
When Was The Golden Age of Bechstein Pianos?
The “golden age” generally refers to the period between 1880 and 1930. During these years, Bechstein reached the height of its reputation and production quality. Their pianos were entirely handcrafted, using the finest materials, and finished with meticulous attention to detail.
By the turn of the 20th century, Bechstein had become Europe’s largest piano manufacturer. Their London showroom, opened in 1885, was a symbol of prestige, and their instruments were played and admired by composers including Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Owning a Bechstein during this era meant owning a piece of cultural and musical history.
What Makes Them Special?
Golden Age Bechsteins are renowned for their:
Warm, lyrical tone – a sound that inspired generations of pianists.
Superior craftsmanship – solid construction and the highest quality felts, woods, and finishes.
Artistic design – many instruments were created as art case pianos, making them as visually stunning as they are musically powerful.
The End of the Golden Age
The 1930s brought challenges for Bechstein. The First World War led to the confiscation of their London showroom, and the economic downturn of the Great Depression reduced demand. The outbreak of the Second World War brought further setbacks. While Bechstein continues to make fine pianos today, those built during the late 19th and early 20th century remain the most celebrated and sought after.
Why Restore Bechsteins?
At Restore and More Pianos, we are proud to specialise in bringing Golden Age Bechstein pianos back to life. Each restoration is a chance to preserve history and craftsmanship for a new generation of pianists. By carefully restoring their tone, touch, and appearance, we ensure these remarkable instruments continue to shine for decades to come.
For us, the Golden Age of Bechstein Pianos isn’t just a period in history – it’s a standard of excellence we work to honour in every instrument that comes into our workshop.
