The Bechstein Model IV and the Arts and Crafts Piano Case

At Restore and More, we are fortunate to work on some of the most beautiful examples of historic pianos. Among these treasures are Bechstein uprights from the Arts and Crafts era (1890s–1910s), with the Model IV often standing out as a compact yet elegant design.

Arts and Crafts Design in Pianos

The Arts and Crafts movement, led by designers like William Morris in Britain, celebrated honesty in craftsmanship, simplicity of line, and the beauty of natural materials. Furniture and interiors of the time rejected heavy Victorian ornamentation, focusing instead on geometric clarity and handmade quality.

Bechstein, a leading German piano maker, embraced this style for the British market, producing uprights that perfectly complemented Arts and Crafts homes.

Distinctive Features of Arts and Crafts Bechstein Uprights

  • Decorative Swirled Cut-Out Panels: Many uprights from this era featured intricate fretwork above the keyboard, with floral or swirling motifs cut into the panel — giving the piano a handcrafted charm.

  • Candlestick Holders: Large brass candlesticks were both functional and decorative, harking back to a time before widespread electric lighting.

  • Simple, Straight Casework: Unlike the ornate carvings of earlier pianos, the Model IV case had clean, rectangular lines, making it feel modern and practical in its day.

  • Natural Wood Finishes: Satin oak, mahogany, or walnut cases highlighted the natural grain of the wood, reflecting the Arts and Crafts ethos.

Why These Pianos Matter Today

Bechstein pianos of this era are already prized for their Golden Age tone — warm, singing treble and resonant bass — but those in Arts and Crafts cases have a double appeal: they are both fine musical instruments and authentic pieces of decorative history.

When restored, they not only bring back the glorious sound of a Golden Age Bechstein but also reclaim their place as a statement piece of furniture, as relevant in an Arts and Crafts–inspired home today as they were in 1900.

At Restore and More, we are proud to bring these rare examples back to life — preserving both their musicality and their artistry. We hope you have enjoyed this blog on The Bechstein Model IV and the Arts and Crafts Piano Case.
